In an effort to get children to eat more fruits and vegetables, doctors at HealthPartners clinics in the Twin Cities and St. Croix Valley areas are busting out their prescribing pads. Through July 31 children getting a wellness exam can receive a "prescription" good for $10 of fresh produce at Cub Foods and other local grocers. The aim is to get kids excited about fruits and vegetables.

Area counties rank in the top five of their respective states based on a variety of health metrics. St. Croix County ranked fifth in Wisconsin while Washington County ranked fourth in Minnesota, according to the America’s Healthiest Places study by financial technology company SmartAsset.

Navigating grief is anything but a straight path. So when a Hudson woman set out to make a book on the subject, she said she decided to color outside the lines — so to speak. Kim Owen Mazur's self-published book, "Losing My Reflection," is part coloring book, part journal for people to record their grief experience. The book was awarded a bronze medal this spring in the Independent Publisher Book Awards contest in the gift/speciality/journal category. We asked Mazur about the inspiration for the book and what she hopes people will get out of it.
Area counties ranked highly in their respective states based on more than 30 health-influencing factors and outcomes, according to the ninth annual County Health Rankings & Roadmaps report out this month. Washington County fared the strongest, ranking second out of 87 Minnesota counties in health factors and third in health outcomes. In Wisconsin, St. Croix County ranked fifth in the state for health factors and sixth in health outcomes.
Surgeries on the wrong body parts and a serious injury from a fall were among the errors reported at two area hospitals, according to the latest Minnesota Department of Health Adverse Health Events report. A surgery or other invasive procedure was performed on the wrong body part at the 86-bed Woodwinds Health Campus in Woodbury between Oct. 7, 2016 and Oct. 6, 2017, according to the report. The error did not result in a serious injury. According to a Woodwinds spokesperson:
Healthy gums are an important aspect of oral health, but the benefits don't stop there. February has traditionally been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month, a time to recognize the role of gum health in a person's overall health. More than 47 percent of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report. Prevalence increases to more than 70 percent for adults aged 65 and up.
