WOODBURY — Goddard School franchisees Rick and Shannon Gehrmann broke ground May 2 on the soon-to-be school. Construction on the nearly 10,000-square-foot building has started at the corner of Hargis Parkway and Finley Road, near East Ridge High School.

The preschool will start accepting students late this summer, and is set to open in the fall for up to nearly 150 students.

Shannon Gehrmann said the school will provide programming for kids six weeks to six years.

She said they may eventually implement after-school learning programs, but are concentrating on preschool learning for now.

"We'll see what families want," she said.

The Goddard curriculum in guided by fun-based learning and STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics — techniques.

The school will provide both outdoor and indoor play areas to allow for year-round play even in the winter.

The Gehrmanns decided to open the school because they have three young children themselves, and "it was harder and harder to leave them to go back to work," Shannon Gehrmann said.

It was on their middle child's birthday last year when they decided to give it a go. The same day this year, May 2, they held the groundbreaking.
